Some 200 Peruvian police officers mobilized to the Chilean border this Wednesdayahead of the arrival of dozens of undocumented Venezuelan and Colombian migrants planning to cross to their countries of origin.
“Entry will not be granted to a foreign citizen who is not properly documented”, said Vicente Romero, Peru’s Interior Minister, at a press conference. “The border with Chile is currently reinforced with more than 200 police and immigration personnel,” he explained.
According to UN agencies deployed on the ground, some 400 people are stranded every day at the Santa Rosa border post in Tacna.
The people left Chile, given the increase in immigration controls in that country. Just this Wednesday, the Chilean Congress approved it laws that make it possible to detain undocumented irregular migrants and extend the length of detention to manage their deportation.

Immigrants who want to leave Chile have indicated so they only try to cross Peruvian territory on their way to their country of origin.
Romero further noted that the Peruvian government evaluates sending the armed forces to the border posts with Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia to support the police in security tasks.
Dozens of migrants, including Venezuelans, Colombians, Ecuadorians and Haitians, have been camping with their suitcases for six days at the border points of Santa Rosa and Chacalluta, Chile.
