Insider: Apple will introduce smart glasses no earlier than 2026
Apple is still interested in smart glasses. The authoritative insider Ming-Chi Ko announced this in his blog on Medium.
According to the analyst, the American company planned to introduce its first smart glasses no earlier than 2026 or 2027. However, Apple will only take this step if it succeeds in developing “metalens” – flat lenses that use metasurfaces to focus light.
Ming-Chi Ko noted that in the future, Apple will replace conventional plastic lenses used in cameras with metal lenses. The insider revealed the timing of the release of such devices: in 2024 they should go into mass production and will be used for the Face ID sensor in the iPad Pro, and in 2025 or 2026 metal lenses will be used in the iPhone.
According to Ko, metalens should replace plastic lenses in smartphone cameras by 2030. The specialist said that metalens have excellent optical properties, they are also much smaller in size than classic lenses. Ming-Chi Ko emphasized that this type of lens is well suited for smart glasses.
At the end of March, Ming-Chi Ko revealed that Apple had delayed production of its alternate reality headset. Due to problems, the start of production of the device was postponed by one or two months – to the third quarter of 2023.
