Google Maps is already a basic tool for many people, both when planning trips out of town or on vacation, as well as at the place of rest. We can e.g. view interesting locations thanks to Street View, view user photos, read opinions, check the opening hours of points of interest and much more. Now Google has decided which will make planning visits to national parks much easier.
Google Maps will greatly facilitate visiting national parks
The Google application will now facilitate route planning by displaying a list of points where – when visiting a given park – we should definitely go. Each of the places is marked on the map and decorated with photos. You can also quickly mark them with, for example, an asterisk. What’s more, the maps will now allow you to search for specific hiking trails in the parks. The application will mark them on the map not with a pin (so far), but will highlight the entire length of the trail. Thanks to this, you will be able to easily see the beginning and end of the route and assess whether it is worth taking the hike. The maps will also provide information on the type and difficulty of the route and whether it is best to cover it on foot or by bike.
Google has also improved navigation, making entering national parks easier than before. Entrances to parks will be properly marked on Google Maps, and when we search for the name of the park in the application, it will direct us directly to the nearest entrance (and not to a random point on the map). The Internet giant also thought about the fact that there is usually no coverage in the wilderness, so the map can be downloaded for offline use directly from the card with information about a given park.
The news is expected to appear on smartphones with iOS and Android in the coming days. Unfortunately, for now, Google has limited the new features to all 63 US national parks. However, the company announced that in the coming months it will start introducing similar novelties also in national parks in other countries around the world.
