Domes, arches and vaults will decorate the first 3D-printed hotel, which will open in a desert landscape in the state of Texas, in the United States. The community that will be created with the construction of this architectural project will be based on 250,000 square meters.
The hotel was created by pioneering 3D printing company ICON, which is currently under contract with NASA to build homes on the moon and Mars. Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON, called Mars Dune Alpha, his construction project on Mars, the “highest fidelity simulated habitat ever built by humans.”
Mars is calling. ☎️
To help us prepare for missions to the Red Planet, @POT is working with partners to 3D print Mars Dune Alpha, a simulated Mars habitat and future home for Mars mission simulation crews at @NASA_Johnson.

This “house” will be a fundamental part of the mission of a NASA mission launching this year. The hotel, on the other hand, will start construction in 2024 and could be finished in 2025.
El Cosmico, a former ‘nomadic camp’ where guests spend the night in safari vehicles and tents, is combined with the hotel realized by 3D ICON. The goal is to improve the experience of the guests, who can enjoy a swimming pool, spa and shared communal facilities.
We celebrate our partnership with @LizLambert and @ICON for reimagining @El_Cosmico hotel in Marfa, our 3D printed pavilion @SXSW It only took two weeks to print and is a preview of what guests will experience at the nomadic camping hotel in 2025! pic.twitter.com/1AC7YJq9PO

In addition, other homes and structures will be built using 3D printing technology.
“By collaborating with the revolutionary thinkers at BIG and Icon, not only am I able to make this dream come true, but we can do it using this incredible 3D printing technology that takes the oldest principles of raw, on-earth based construction combines with futuristic technology that works seamlessly in a faster, more sustainable and more efficient way than modern building”, says Liz Lambert, one of the supervisors of the hotel project.
“Moreover, the innovation and beauty of the types of structures we can build extend far beyond the beaten track. It’s fitting that Icon has a contract with NASA to build the first homes on the moon and on Mars. I’m thrilled that we can discover his incredible work here in our own little cosmic landscape under the stars in the far west of Texas.”
