The Congress of Chili approved this Tuesday a bill that reduces the working day from 45 to 40 hours a week; which is now expected to be signed into law by the president gabriel boric.
If made official, Chile would become the country with the shortest working day in Latin America along with Ecuador.
It is worth noting that the reduction will be applied gradually over a period of five years. Thus, during the first, the work week will be 44 hours; in three years, 42 hours and five years, 40 hours. The International Labor Organization (ILO) recommends applying this figure.
In addition, the law establishes that you can work four days and rest three, and even do a maximum of 5 extra hours per week, and no longer up to 12, as current regulations govern.
“The idea of 40 hours arose 6 years ago talking with workers from La Pintana and today it becomes a reality. It is very gratifying to see that politics can be up to the task of citizens and respond to their needs,” said the Minister of the General secretary of government, camilla vallejoone of the authors of the project presented in 2017 when she was a deputy.
In which countries do you work the most hours a week?
According to the ILO, in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Argentina, Mexico. Paraguay and Uruguay working days range between 46 and 48 hoursbeing the longest in Latin America.
While in Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras and the Dominican Republic the ratio is 41 to 45 hours.
