Elon Musk took over Twitter just a few weeks ago. In this short time, however, the controversial billionaire managed to cause several minor and major scandals related to the platform. Musk began his rule by laying off half of the company’s employees. He then introduced a new way to verify accounts, which sparked a tsunami of fake news on the platform.
In the meantime, Twitter’s new owner wrote an email to employees (those he hadn’t previously fired) giving them a choice: dedicate yourself to the new, “hardcore” Twitter or take a briefing and leave.
“Only exceptional performance will provide a grade to move on,” Musk said in an email. He also said that the new Twitter will be led mainly by engineers.
Advertisers turning away from Twitter?
Elon Musk’s controversial actions can cost Twitter a lot. According to the report resort Media Matters for America, in the last few weeks, 50 of the top 100 advertisers on the platform have announced or have withdrawn their ads from the platform. And we’re talking about companies that spent almost $2 billion on Twitter in 2020 alone.
The list published by Media Matters for America includes companies such as AT&T, Ford, Jeep, Dell, Canel, Chevolet, HP, LinkedIn, The Coca-Cola Company, The Kraft Heinz Company, Heineken NV and Nestle.
What else will Elon Musk surprise us with? What future awaits the platform? Is there an alternative to Twitter? We talk about it in the latest episode of the TechnoTerapia podcast. In the RetroTech series, we remember the first social networking sites in Poland.
