Canalys: Global smartphone shipments fell nine percent in the second quarter

Global smartphone shipments plummeted nine percent year-on-year in the second quarter. This is reported in a report on the Canalys website.

According to analysts, the demand for smartphones began to fall due to the unstable economic situation and regional uncertainty. Samsung retained its top spot in the market with a 21 percent share, while the company ramped up shipments of low-cost A-series phones. Apple remained in second place with a 17 percent share due to the popularity of the iPhone 13 line.

Below are Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, which received shares of 14, 10 and 9 percent, respectively. “Economic headwinds, sluggish demand and inventory buildup have led suppliers to reassess their portfolio strategies for the remainder of 2022,” said Canalys analyst Runar Bjorhovd.

“While parts supplies and price pressures are easing, several logistics and manufacturing challenges remain, such as tightening import laws in some emerging markets and customs delaying shipments,” said analyst Toby Zhu. It is reported that in the near future, manufacturers will try to improve sales through advertising campaigns.

Earlier, Counterpoint experts said that in May, shipments of smartphones in the global market fell below 100 million units – the second time in the last 10 years. The negative situation is caused by a shortage of components, rising inflation, a slowdown in production growth in China and the Ukrainian crisis.
