Steven Soderbergh steps in to direct The Batman Part II

Director Steven Soderbergh has temporarily taken over filming on The Batman Part II to assist director Matt Reeves during a family matter, star Robert Pattinson has revealed.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, Pattinson said he was looking forward to completing production on the superhero sequel and praised Soderbergh for stepping in to help. The actor described Soderbergh as completely selfless and incredibly generous, explaining that Reeves had put extensive work into the screenplay and was close to finishing before needing to step aside.

Pattinson added that having a filmmaker of Soderbergh's talent step up to help bring the project to the editing room was wonderful. When asked about the production timeline, the British actor noted that cameras appeared to have begun rolling already and confirmed that he was scheduled to begin his own scenes in a few days.

Filming schedule and release date

Warner Bros. announced on October 5 that Reeves had to temporarily step away from the shoot because of a family issue, according to Variety. Despite the mid-production handover, there has been no update regarding any potential postponement to the theatrical release of The Batman Part II, which remains scheduled to hit cinemas on February 18, 2028.

Reeves clarified the situation on social media platform X, emphasizing that he was not stepping down from the production. The filmmaker said he was deeply grateful to Soderbergh for offering help during a difficult period to complete principal photography, and thanked supporters for their concern and good wishes.

DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn delivered a similar message of reassurance on Threads, telling fans that Reeves remains the director of The Batman II and always will be. Gunn added that studio leadership could not express how deeply grateful and moved they were by Soderbergh offering to help Reeves realize his vision.

Director collaboration and cast

Soderbergh stated that his objective on set was to collaborate closely with Reeves and the existing crew. The veteran filmmaker said the goal was to shoot footage that will integrate seamlessly into material already captured, ensuring Reeves can finish his film properly.

The comic book sequel features an ensemble cast that includes Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright, alongside newcomers Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Charles Dance. Reeves previously directed the 2022 blockbuster The Batman, which introduced Pattinson as Bruce Wayne in Gotham City, with Farrell playing the Penguin, Serkis portraying Alfred Pennyworth and Wright appearing as James Gordon.

Soderbergh is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker best known for directing Traffic, Erin Brockovich and the Ocean's Eleven trilogy. His temporary involvement on the Warner Bros. project brings an experienced director to assist Reeves and keep principal photography moving forward.
