Former head of the International Football Federation (FIFA) Joseph Blatter has been charged with fraud. Sky Sports reported.
The Swiss prosecutor’s office has been investigating Blatter’s activities as head of FIFA for six years. The 85-year-old former official is accused of having illegally enriched Michel Platini, who at the time of the crime was serving as head of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). We are talking about embezzlement of the sum of two million Swiss francs. Platini and Blatter may face trial in the coming months.
A corruption scandal in FIFA erupted in 2015. Then, on suspicion of committing crimes, nine sports officials were detained. Blatter and Platini were barred from football activities. Such a sanction was imposed on them by the Arbitration Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee. The Frenchman later managed to reduce the period of disqualification from eight to six years.
Blatter is the eighth president in FIFA history. He first took office in 1998, and then was re-elected several times: in 2002, 2007, 2011 and 2015.
