The head of the Women’s Tennis Association Simon opposed the removal of the Russians from tournaments
The head of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Steve Simon, opposed the removal of Russian athletes from international tournaments. His words are reported by RIA Novosti.
“You never know what the future may bring. But I can tell you that we have never banned athletes from the tour because of a political position, ”he said. Simon added that if the governments of the countries where tournaments are held prevent the entry of athletes, then the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the WTA will not be able to prevent this and will follow the instructions of the authorities.
On March 1, the ATP announced that it would allow the Russians to compete in neutral status. Tennis players in tournaments will be deprived of the flag and anthem. At the same time, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) took a tougher stance, removing Russian athletes from participating in competitions under its auspices.
