The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has warned that 28% of Ukrainians, a third of the populationcould fall below the poverty line if the war with Russia drags on.
In a statement, the UNDP has indicated that the situation could cause the loss of 18 years of progress in social matters and economic and has warned that an additional 62% of the population will be vulnerable to poverty.
Thus, he pointed out that in order to mitigate these “dramatic setbacks in terms of development, it is essential to provide specific support to the Government of Ukraine”. “This must happen in parallel with the humanitarian response,” which should go “hand in hand” in Ukraineas stated in the text.
UNDP data also show that 90% of the Ukrainian population could fall into poverty and in an economically vulnerable situation and has warned that the “war is causing unimaginable suffering and tragic loss of human life.
“As humanitarian need becomes a priority, the impact of the war becomes more apparent“, has asserted Achim Steiner, administrator of the UNDP. “We must focus on the suffering (…) and stop this grim trajectory,” he said.
In this sense, he has argued that, “as part of the UN’s commitment to the Ukrainian people, UNDP seeks to preserve progress in development” and has insisted on the need to achieve “peace” to avoid “suffering, destruction and poverty”.
“This includes supporting the Government to maintain governance structuresinstitutions and services, which are the basis of all societies”, collects the text. Figures from the Ukrainian Government point to almost 100,000 million euros in losses due to the damage caused to civil infrastructure.
The war has caused that 50% of businesses have had to close their doors, while the other half continues to function below capacity. “It is necessary to introduce a series of measures for the coming weeks in order to mitigate the fall of the population into poverty as the conflict continues,” he added.
