In an extraordinary assembly, the members of Club Sport Emelec will establish a new date for board elections this Wednesday –after a judge suspended at the beginning of the year those that were scheduled for January 30– and they will decide on what has been done during the last two months by the current leadership, which is in extended functions.
“The assembly is the highest body of the club. It is statutorily convened (disseminated in the main media of Guayaquil). The partners will decide on what has been done in the board of directors from January 8 to March 8 and the date of the call for elections”, Nassib Neme, president of Emelec, told EL UNIVERSO this day.
On January 20, the board of the millionaire club suspended the extraordinary meeting of members that was scheduled for that same day, alleging that the Municipality of Guayaquil ordered that the meeting cannot take place due to the health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. .
Weeks before, Emelec decided, “in accordance with what was resolved in a session held on January 3, 2022” and guided by the club’s statute, convene an extraordinary general assembly with the aim of “knowing and resolving” the demand for protection action that has still suspended the elections in the millionaire castscheduled for January 30.
At the beginning of the year it became known that, based on a protection action, a judge suspended the next board elections in the Guayaquil club, a decision by which the current leadership of the institution – chaired by Neme – already expressed at the time his “profound rejection”.
This Wednesday, the president of Emelec ruled out that the assembly could be suspended again: “There is no order from any judge that specifically prevents the shareholders’ meeting from meeting, according to its statutes”.
Emelec Board resolves to extend functions at least until mid-year
On January 19, protected by article 52.4 of the Emelec statute, which indicates that “the duties and powers of the board of directors are to temporarily resolve the doubts that arise about the application of the statute until the general assembly knows and resolves”the leadership of the electric club, chaired in the current administrative period (2018-2021) by Neme, decided to remain in extended functions until there is a next directive.
