Irati Idiakez: “Being a woman, athlete and disabled must be normalized”

Irati Idiakezthe Paralympic snowboard world runner-up, claimed this Tuesday the “diversity” that exists in society and assured that the condition of “woman, athlete and disabled must be normalize it” to keep advancing did the inclusion.

The athlete from Getaria suffered a accident four years ago in Chile, when the driver of the bus that covered the route between Santiago and ViƱa del Mar lost control and overturned. Idiakez had to undergo several operations that ended with arm amputation right.

“When I had the accident, and after losing my arm, I had to work with a psychologist for accept me, love me myself and manage the day-to-day moments, because many times the wars we have are against ourselves,” said Irati, in a talk held at the Universal Pay headquarters in Madrid, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

“Normalizing disability would help make people visible and, in this case, those who play sports. Most of what comes out in the media is about men and soccer, but there are also women who play sports. I am a woman and an athlete and I prepare myself for big competitions like the Games,” she concluded.
