Sterling announces return date to defend UFC title

American mixed martial artist (MMA) Aljamain Sterling has outlined a timeline for returning to performances. Bloody Elbow reported.

The American wants to defend his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) belt in early 2022. Sterling said that he is counting on the fight with the winner of the fight between Russian Peter Jan and Corey Sandhagen. The reigning champion also named a possible date for a new fight: it can take place in January, February or March.

Jan and Sandhagen will fight at the UFC in Abu Dhabi on October 30. Initially, Sterling was supposed to be the rival of the Russian fighter, but the American withdrew from the title fight, citing problems with his neck. Yang has publicly questioned his former rival’s health problems.

In March 2021, Yang failed to defend his UFC bantamweight title. He lost to Sterling by disqualification: the Russian struck a forbidden blow.

Ian first won the UFC belt by defeating Brazilian Jose Aldo. Speaking in Russia, he became the ACB bantamweight champion.
