The Kremlin considered this Friday that it is “a pity” that UEFA has decided to withdraw the organization of the Champions League final, on May 28, to Saint Petersburg as a consequence of President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
“It is a pity that this decision was made,” said Dimitri Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman. “Saint Petersburg would have offered ideal conditions for holding such a football festival,” he added.
The president of the Russian Football Federation, Alexander Diukov, considered for his part that UEFA’s decision responds to “political reasons”.
“The Russian Football Federation has always upheld the principle that ‘sport is outside of politics’ and therefore cannot support this decision,” the official added in a statement.
This decision “violates the principles of sport and attacks the interests of players, coaches and fans,” criticized Diukov. (D)
