Manchester United announced this Friday that it had terminated its sponsorship contract with the Russian airline Aeroflot, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops.
“Following the events in Ukraine, the club has withdrawn sponsorship rights from Aeroflot,” United said in a statement.
On Thursday, the British government imposed a set of sanctions on Moscow, including a ban on the Russian airline from entering British airspace.
Moscow later banned all UK-related aircraft, including transit flights, from entering its airspace.
“We share the concern of our fans around the world,” the club said, adding that “our thoughts are with those affected.”
Aeroflot has been the official sponsor of Manchester United since 2013 and the team regularly traveled on Aeroflot planes on their European trips.
However, on their way to Madrid to play against Atlético on Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, the team used a device from the charter company Titan Airways.
The contract in force was valid until 2023. Manchester United continues to appear on the Aeroflot website in the list of its sponsorship agreements. (D)
