According to information provided by the American daily USA Today, the Olympic torch has gone out in the Chinese capital. The sudden snowfall that passed through this town on Sunday had to contribute to it. The photos published by the Americans really do not show a traditional flame.
According to tradition, the Olympic torch may only be lit with the fire from Olympia. Before the start of the Games, he is picked up at a special ceremony in Greece and transferred by the relay to the venue of the Games.
– During the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, a storm extinguished the candle. One employee re-ignited the flame using a lighter and a newspaper. When the representatives found out about it, the candle was extinguished again and then fired again, this time thanks to a torch with Olympic fire kept in stock, so that it was done in accordance with Olympic tradition and procedures – we read in “USA Today” .
The organizing committee of the Olympic Games in Beijing firmly denied that anything was wrong with the Olympic torch. The Chinese admitted, however, that the Sunday snowfall might have affected the visibility of the flame.
