Xiaomi failed to establish itself as the leader of the Russian smartphone market. It is reported by “Kommersant”.
As representatives of the Russian retailer Svyaznoy told reporters, in January Xiaomi sales in units decreased from 24.4 to 18.9 percent. The information that the phones of the Chinese brand began to be bought less often was confirmed by the interlocutors of the publication in two companies involved in the sale of electronics. From the Svyaznoy report, it follows that in January the leader of the smartphone market is Samsung with a share of 35.2 percent. The second and third positions are occupied by Xiaomi and Apple, which have a share of 18.8 and 16.8 percent, respectively.

The market leader in monetary terms was Apple, which has a share of 44.6 percent. Next came Samsung – 28.4 percent, Xiaomi – 10.8 percent. Also, representatives of the chain of stores reported that in 2021, sales of smartphones in pieces decreased for the first time since 2017 – by 7 percent to 29.4 million pieces. In monetary terms, the market grew by 28 percent to 751.1 billion rubles.
Mikhail Dogadin, Vice President for Procurement and Development of Svyaznoy, said that the decline in Xiaomi’s share is due to a shortage of goods at the beginning of the year. “Most likely, the brand redistributed the manufactured goods in favor of other countries instead of Russia,” added Andrey Tarasov, executive director of diHouse, which is one of the largest Xiaomi distributors in Russia.
MTS suggested that Xiaomi’s share would be redistributed among other market participants – for example, Samsung and Realme: “They successfully rebuilt the line of low-cost smartphones, where Xiaomi used to be in the lead.”
In February, it became known that Xiaomi delivered the most smartphones to the Russian market in 2021. Xiaomi was also named the most popular smartphone brand in Russia in the fourth quarter.
