Peskov: Russia will finalize the foreign policy concept, taking into account changes in the situation in the world

Russia’s foreign policy concept will undergo adjustments, taking into account the current situation in the world and ongoing changes in the international arena. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

“Our foreign policy documents, of course, are undergoing changes. (…) And it (the concept – ed.) will be finalized. But just taking into account what is happening now, ”the spokesman said.

At the same time, he hopes that Europe will still give priority to its desire to become more sovereign in foreign policy matters.

At the same time, as Peskov emphasized, Russian leader Vladimir Putin will continue to insist that security issues that are fundamental for the Russian Federation should not be left without attention and ignored.

It should be noted that earlier, following the results of negotiations with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Putin said that the dialogue with the United States and NATO on security guarantees for Russia was not over. According to him, in the US response “there is no position” on all key issues, such as the non-proliferation of NATO, the non-deployment of strike systems near the borders of the Russian Federation, the return of NATO infrastructure by 1997. Moscow, in Putin’s words, is “categorically opposed to expanding NATO with new members in the east” because it poses a “common threat.”

We also recall that at the end of 2021, Russia presented its vision of security in Europe to the United States. On January 26, US Ambassador to Moscow John Sullivan handed over Washington’s written response to Russia’s proposals for security guarantees.

Later that day, State Department Secretary Anthony Blinken told a briefing that the US response to Russian security guarantee proposals included Washington’s concerns about Moscow’s actions and the US proposal.

“We have clearly indicated that there are basic principles that we will uphold and defend, including the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as the right of states to choose their security measures and alliances,” he explained.

For his part, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg clarified that the alliance handed over its terms to Russia “in parallel with the United States.” According to him, NATO’s response to Russia’s European security initiatives includes Ukraine and the situation around it. NATO Secretary General once again called on Moscow to “de-escalate”. Also, he added, Russia should withdraw its troops from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.
