After the forbidden substance trimetazidine was detected in the body of the 15-year-old woman, the Russian figure skater is now suspended after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Organization () appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This means that she is not sure of her participation in the soloists competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics, which is scheduled for Tuesday 15 February.
A few days ago, Walijewa won the gold in the team, becoming the first competitor in the history of the Olympic Games to successfully make a double jump (twice). However, the medal ceremony did not take place, and the whole matter was widely echoed.
The confusion around Walijewa is enormous, because she is not yet 16 years old, so she is a protected person under the law. This means that even if she breached an anti-doping rule, she could not be officially identified by the competition organizers.
The former American figure skater stands on the side of Walijewa. “All this situation is tearing my heart out”
American figurehead Adam Rippon (bronze medalist from Pyongchang in the team competition) was in defense of Waliyeva and allegations of doping after it was reported that a Russian tested positive for a banned substance in December.
The 15-year-old’s sample was taken on December 25, which is a month and a half ago. Trimetazidine is a drug used in ischemic heart disease, it has a cardioprotective effect, i.e. it protects the cells of the heart muscle. WADA (the World Anti-Doping Commission) strictly prohibits this chemical
– The whole situation is tearing my heart out. This fashion girl is only 15 years old. She is underage. The adults around her have completely failed her. They put her in this terrible situation and should be punished, Rippon tweeted firmly.
In the next entry, the American sharply attacked the Russian Olympic Committee. The ROC has disgraced its athletes and should feel embarrassed again. My heart is heartbroken because of the Russian athletes competing in Beijing, all of whom will be questioned, he added.
– The IOC ban on Russia’s participation in the Olympics was not strict enough. I believe ROC players are doing what they are told to please their coaches and federation, Rippon concluded.

Walijewa was first suspended from the Russian Anti-Doping Agency. It subsequently appealed the temporary suspension and it was temporarily lifted. Subsequently, the Russian Olympic Committee issued a declaration stating that the Olympic gold was due to the Russian competitors, and Kamil Walijewa should be allowed to continue the competition.
“Considering the fact that the positive sample of the competitor was not collected during the Olympic Games, its result and the results of the entire team in the team competition at the Olympics are not subject to verification” -.
The ROC also added that “Walijewa repeatedly undergoes doping tests before and after December 25, including those carried out at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing and all the results were negative. The competitor has the right to train and participate in all competitions without any restrictions, as long as her status at the Olympic Games, otherwise the Court of Arbitration for Sport will not decide.
