The first case of death from Lassa fever was recorded in the east of England. In total, there are three confirmed cases of this disease in the country, the British Health Agency (UKHSA) reported. All cases are related to trips to West Africa, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the UKHSA, the risk to the general public remains very low, and doctors are now contacting people who have had close contact with patients.

Lassa fever is an acute infectious disease, the disease is severe. The source of infection, along with African rats, can be a sick person, all of whose secretions are contagious. The disease is transmitted by food, water, airborne droplets, contact and sexual contact.

In January, 40 people died due to an outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria. Prior to these cases, eight cases of Lassa fever had been imported into the UK since 1980, with no evidence of further transmission of the disease in the country, according to UKHSA Chief Medical Adviser Susan Hopkins.
