American journalist Dan Wetzel published an article in Yahoo Sports on the scandal surrounding the doping test of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, in which he called the athlete “pumped up with drugs.” The material is available on the publication’s website.
“It would not be surprising if it turns out that Russia drugged a young athlete with some kind of drug, and at the same time she is allowed to continue competing, because she is too young and naive to understand that she was drugged,” Wetzel admitted. A journalist from the United States criticized the Russian team for continuing to violate anti-doping rules after the scandal at the Sochi Olympics, and considered that foreign skaters have the right to suspect all Russian rivals of foul play.
Valieva’s dubious doping test became known on February 9. It was reported that in the sample of a 15-year-old Russian woman, the banned drug trimetazidine was found. In this regard, the International Olympic Committee held legal consultations with the International Skating Union and postponed the award ceremony of the Olympic team tournament. A day later, it became known that Russia would not be deprived of the gold medal in the team competition, and Valiyeva would be allowed to compete in the singles tournament.
The American team became the second after Russia in the team figure skating tournament of the Games in Beijing. Valieva’s victorious skates helped the Russians win gold.
