The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, advocated this Thursday for relaunch nuclear power in the coming years and has proposed the construction of up to 14 new reactorswithin a strategy in which it wants to combine this type of industry with the renewablewith a view to increasing domestic electricity production.
The president, who faces new elections in April, has outlined the lines of a strategy with a view to 2030 but that would leave his mark for several more decades. Thus, he has stated that he aspires to “independence and freedom” of France in energy matters.
Macron, who has visited a turbine factory for power plants in Belfort, wants to start the construction of six new-generation reactors and study another eight before 2050. By that year, France has promised to be a carbon neutral country.
The president explained that it is a “plural strategy”, with a view to combining nuclear and renewable energy to reduce dependence on foreign supplies and more polluting. Both, he added, will provide cheaper energy in the long term and free France from the “turbulence” of the markets.
