Two Korean short track skaters Hwang Dae-heon and Lee June-seo confidently won their semi-finals in the men’s 1000m race and had a great chance of winning an Olympic medal. In addition, Hwang Dae-heon broke the Olympic record, sometimes 1: 23,042.
The Koreans, however, were disqualified after the semi-finals. The reason for such a decision was the illegal, too late change of the driving lane and causing a collision with other skaters. Many Koreans were indignant at the decision. On Tuesday, the Koreans announced that they would protest at the Arbitration Tribunal for Sport (CAS) and the International Olympic Committee. Earlier, they lodged a protest with the International Ice Union, but it was rejected.
– Our athletes fought fairly and in fact they are the winners. We will use all legal possibilities to make sure that such unfair judicial decisions will never again be taken at international events. Many activists and even ordinary citizens appeal to us to pack our things and return to the country with the players as a sign of protest. However, we are not at this stage yet. We have a few important starts, in which we have our medal chances. We want to provide our athletes with equal chances of victory, said Yoon Hong-Geun, head of the Korean Skating Union at a press conference.
The incident also sparked a multitude of outrageous comments on social networking sites. Korean fans believe that the judges disqualified the Koreans to increase the chances of the Chinese winning medals on their own ice. After Hwang and Lee were disqualified, the Chinese skaters advanced to the final. It was there that the Chinese, Ren Ziwei, won the Olympic gold medal. His compatriot Li Wenlong was second, and Shaoang Liu, Hungary, was third.
Poles did not compete in the men’s short-track race of 1000 meters.
