Cristiano Ronaldo misses penalty in normal time, United fall against Second Division team

Manchester United are out of the FA Cup. On the afternoon of this Friday, the team received Middlesbrough, an English second division club at Old Trafford, and, after a 1-1 draw in normal time and extra time, was eliminated on penalties by 8-7 in the dispute. The match was valid for the fourth stage of the tournament.

The Red Devils had a great chance to open the scoring early in the first half. Paul Pogba was fouled by Anfernee Dijksteel inside the penalty area, and the referee pointed to the lime mark. In charge, rare scene. Cristiano Ronaldo went for the ball and missed.

However, five minutes after the bid, United managed to swing the opposing nets. Bruno Fernandes took off a great shot for Jadon Sancho, wide open on the left. Even without much angle and under pressure from the marking, the Englishman managed to beat the goalkeeper to open the scoring.

However, in the second half, Middlesbrough managed to recover and tied the match. Duncan Watmore crossed and Matt Crooks finished for the open goal. The bid was surrounded by controversy, as the ball hit Watmore’s hand before the assist.

Even after the tie, United continued to control the game and had some good chances to score, but they didn’t take advantage. With everything equal on the scoreboard, the match headed for overtime, which ended with no balls in the net.

The penalties were quite long. The series of five ended in a tie with all charges converted. In alternating, better for Middlesbrough. 8 to 7, with Elanga missing the last penalty.

Now, United turn their attention to the Premier League. Next Tuesday, the Red Devils will face Burnley, away from home, at 17:00 (Brasília time). Middlesbrough will face Queens Park Rangers in the English second division.
