“Only the details of the contract have been refined and nothing should prevent the final agreement. The contract is to be in force until the end of this year, a gross salary of PLN 200,000 plus a bonus for promotion to the world championship finals,” we read in “”.
From the moment Paulo Sousa said goodbye, he was the main favorite to replace the Portuguese. And although many names have been mentioned in the context of the staff over the last three weeks – incl. Italian Fabio Cannavaro or recently – it finally fell on Nawałka, who has the support of Polish representatives. And above all, Nawałka met one of the most important criteria that practically ruled out the foreign option: he has adequate knowledge of Polish footballers to be ready for the March play-offs for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Nawałka, the new-old selector
For Adam Nawałka, this will be the second approach to. During the first, which lasted less than five years (2013-18), the 64-year-old achieved the greatest success in the 21st century with his staff – he was promoted to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016. Then he qualified with the team for the 2018 world championship in Russia, but his team there disappointed and was eliminated after the group stage (1-1 with Senegal, 0-3 with Colombia and 1-0 with Japan). Since then, Nawałka practically did not work as a coach – his only job in the last 3.5 years was a several-month-long, unsuccessful episode in Lech Poznań.
When are the play-offs?
At the March training camp there will not be too much time for this – while it will start on March 21, the 24th Polish national team will face Russia in Moscow (and in the eventual final five days later with the winner of the Sweden-Czech Republic match). Promotion to the November-December World Cup is the main goal set for Nawałka by the president of the Polish Football Association.
