The pipe of the Heavy Crude Oil Pipeline (OCP) Ecuador broke in the Piedra Fina sector, in Napo. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Friday, January 28, and produced an oil spill in the area.
The Amazon media broadcast images and videos where it is observed that the crude oil spurts out of the crack in the pipe, contaminating the vegetation of the place.
Through a statement, the company OCP Ecuador provided details of what happened at 5:00 p.m. Heavy rains were recorded in the area and due to the weakening of the terrain there was a landslide of stones that fell on the pipeline and split it. In this place the pipeline is exposed to rivers, the company described.
“Once the incident was confirmed, the company has activated its emergency protocol and has immediately initiated containment actions aimed at avoiding environmental damage, and also to assess the magnitude of the damage to the infrastructure, as well as the start of the corresponding repairs. ”, explained the OCP Ecuador.
It was indicated that the flow of oil has already been controlled and it is about avoiding damage to water sources. In addition, it did not suspend the reception or export of crude oil.
“All the corresponding measures have been arranged to prevent any environmental damage and for this it has arranged all the necessary resources to comply with said commitment,” said Roberto Grijalva, Operations Manager of OCP Ecuador.
