The series ‘Victims of prison bleeding in Ecuador’, published in Diario EL UNIVERSO from November 21 to 27, 2021, received two awards in the journalistic contest organized by the National Union of Journalists (UNP).
The publications, written by journalists Marjorie Ortiz and Sandra Miranda, won first place in the reporting category and the 2021 Eugenio Espejo National Award, the highest award of this award.
This series, made up of seven installments, compiles nine stories of prisoners who were massacred in the Litoral Penitentiary, which they entered for minor crimes. Some did not have a sentence and others had already served it and were waiting for their release ticket.
The vice president of the UNP, Iván Morales, congratulated the authors for “the dedication, effort and journalistic commitment shown, for the care in managing resources, the topicality of the topic, the sensitivity and responsibility with which they presented their notes ”.

After the award ceremony, Mariana Velasco, outgoing president of the UNP, presented her work report. In addition, the institution presented the twelve new directors of the institution for the following two years.
