The goalkeeper Aaron McCarey, of Northern Irish team Glentoran, was sent off on Saturday after attacking a teammate who failed to avoid an opponent’s goal that determined a 2-2 draw with Coleraine, for the local championship.
After conceding the goal with 10 minutes to go, McCarey ran out of his area towards his teammate Bobby Burns, who had lost the ball in midfield, giving rise to the opposing team’s tie.
The goalkeeper, visibly irritated, would have hit Burns in the face before grabbing him by the shirt when his partner was on the ground.
“Aaron shook his (Burns) hand in the locker room and told him this should never have happened,” explained Glentoran coach Mick McDermott.
With this result, Clentoran occupies the 6th position in the table with 13 points, two less than Coleraine, who is fourth, while the leader of the Northern Ireland Championship, Cliftonville, has 20 units.
