This Friday, FIFA announced the change of Oceania’s representative at the Club World Cup, which will take place in February 2022, in the United Arab Emirates. Auckland City, from New Zealand, will be replaced by AS Pirae, from Tahiti, due to the worsening of the covid-19 crisis.
FIFA had already had dialogues with the New Zealand Football Federation, Auckland City and the Oceania Football Confederation, however, the New Zealand government’s restrictions to try to stop the spread of the pandemic in the region forced the country’s team to give up to participate in the Club World Cup.
The modest AS Pirae, from Tahiti, joins Monterrey, Chelsea, Palmeiras, Al Hilal, Al Ahly and Al Jazira, UAE champion and tournament host.
The FIFA Club World Cup will take place between February 3rd and 12th. The first match will be played by AS Pirae, who will face Al Jazira. Whoever advances will face Al HIlal.
