The ITU rises to S / 4,600 in 2022: what are its effects?

The Tax Tax Unit (FROM) rose to S / 4,600 for the year 2022, a figure that represents an increase of S / 200 in relation to this year’s amount. This variation is the largest recorded since 1999.

The increase, explains Jorge Carrillo Acosta, professor at Pacific Business School, it is associated with annual inflation. And it is that generally it rises between S / 50 and S / 100 every year; However, the 2022 figure is justified “because 2021 inflation will close at more than 6%”, while in previous periods it was around 2%.

Along these lines, Francisco Pantigoso, professor at the Universidad del Pacífico, points out that with the increase, “the State is recognizing a higher cost of living and in this way seeks to help companies and individuals.”

Experts agree that the new amount will have direct effects on the calculation of taxes and fines, as well as on labor issues.

Impact on the family economy

The rise of the ITU increases the limits for the concept of Income Tax (IR). Thus, workers who do not exceed 7 UIT (S / 32,000) in gross annual income will be released from this obligation.

Carrillo highlights that payroll workers will pay less income tax on their wages, so they will have more money in their pocket. For example, for a monthly gross salary of S / 3,000, the annual IR savings will be S / 112. The monthly gross salary limit is also raised to be exempt, which in 2021 is S / 2,200 and for 2022 It will be S / 2,300.

While in the case of independent workers who issue receipts for fees, the maximum monthly amount of issuance to avoid paying taxes increases from S / 3,208 to S / 3,354.

And the limit of personal expenses to request a refund of income tax from work (4th and 5th category), which is 3 UIT, increases from S / 13,200 to S / 13,800.

On the other hand, This increase also means that a greater subsidy is obtained for the Mivivienda Credit, through the Good Payer Bonus, which is in function of the ITU.

Fines and procedures

Although less property and alcabala tax will be paid, the amounts of administrative fines and legal procedures carried out by natural and legal persons will rise.

“Traffic fines are affected, as well as some procedures for licenses or documents, because they are a percentage of the ITU “, explains Carrillo.

Effect on mypes

Companies to belong to the Mype Tax Regime, where taxes are lower than the General Regime, must have an annual income of less than 1,700 UIT.

In this way, “some companies that are above the ceiling, by increasing the ITU also enter this regime and are benefited by paying less taxes,” says the specialist.

Impact on tax collection

In order to counteract the increase in fines whose value depends on a percentage of the ITU, Francisco Pantigoso indicated “that at the same time changes should be made in the tax system (…) so as not to affect the pocket of taxpayers.” However, he stated that the collection will increase for this concept. However, it highlights that “The nature of the fines is not collection, but dissuasive.”

On the other hand, Jorge Carrillo pointed out that the increase in the UIT will generate a reduction in the tax collection for IR, but that it will not be significant.

The key

Value. The amount of the ITU is established by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and is valid for an entire calendar year (from January 1 to December 31). It is calculated mainly on the basis of inflation, which is why it tends to rise each year.
