Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand steps down as national team coach

Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand has stepped down twenty days after his country’s team was eliminated in the round of 16 of Euro 2024 by Germany, the Danish federation announced on Friday (19).

“It has been an incredible honor and privilege to have coached our national team for four years,” Hjulmand said in the federation’s statement.

“With the World Cup coming up in two years, I realized it is better for the team to have a new face, who comes with new ideas to write a new chapter for this fantastic team,” said the coach.

Denmark were eliminated by Germany (2-0) in the European Championship after having managed a hard-fought qualification for the round of 16 after a first phase with just two goals scored and three draws in three games.

Prior to this year’s edition, Hjulmand had led Denmark to the Euro 2021 semi-finals, where they were eventually eliminated by England.

Then came the disappointing Qatar 2022 World Cup, in which the Danes finished bottom of the group stage, despite being in a theoretically accessible group, with France, Australia and Tunisia.

The coach who will take over until the end of the year will be former assistant Morten Wieghorst.
