Former doctor Fuentes accuses Spain of using state doping at the 1992 Olympics
Former sports doctor Eufemiano Fuentes has accused Spain of using state doping at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. His words are quoted by ARD.
Fuentes said he received orders from the Spanish government a few years before the Games that said, “Do whatever you want, but we need medals.” At the same time, athletes were not allowed to test positive or have health problems that would harm the result. “We had a strategy that allowed us to work freely, without pressure, without the press, without anyone,” he said.
The doctor said that the athletes were given growth hormones, testosterone, anabolic steroids and other drugs. “We recruited athletes, prepared them technically, trained them physically and helped them medically so that they could show their best side. We took their blood in advance to transfuse it before the competition,” he revealed the details.
At the Olympics in Barcelona, the Spanish won 13 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals. At the previous games in Seoul in 1988, the team received one gold, one silver and two bronze.
