The decree to identify the speed of vessels will be ready by the end of August. Artisanal fishermen denounce invasion by Chinese fleets and inaction by the Government.
The Minister of Production (Produce), Sergio Gonzalezcommented that by the end of August the supreme decree to prohibit illegal fishing in the Peruvian sea will be ready.
“Any foreign vessel will be required to have a satellite control system to identify the speed at which they are travelling: whether fishing or cruising, to discourage them and regulate the possible advantage they would take,” he told the media after the Council of Ministers session.
That is, they will have to have their Satellite Tracking System (Sisesat) operational and their satellite positioning (track) will be reviewed for the last six months prior to their request for access.
As reported The Republic On more than one occasion, artisanal fishing fronts, the National Society of Industries (SNI) and the National Society of Artisanal Fishing (Sonapescal), have denounced that hundreds of foreign vessels – mostly Chinese – capture hydrobiological resources without satellite control.
Midweek, artisanal fishermen from Paita (Piura) protested against Chinese vessels, warning that “2,500 boats are on the edge of the 200 miles fishing for the resources that enter our coasts.”
According to the Produce DS project —which is open to public comments for modifications for 10 days— supervision will be carried out by the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guard – DICAPI of the Peruvian Navy.
In addition, foreign vessels that appear on a list of illegal activities will not be allowed to enter the Peruvian maritime domain.
The parties affected by the high incidence of Chinese vessels in Peruvian waters have denounced that Produce has done little or nothing to protect our species. An example: the same portfolio led by Sergio González acknowledged to this newspaper that they applied a fine of S/250 to a Chinese vessel that fished illegally (Tian Xiang).
