Colombian cyclist Miguel Ángel ‘Superman’ López return to team Astana, in which he spent five seasons in his first stage and, after his brief stint at the Movistar Team, he will once again lead the Kazakh squad.

“Long-term leader Miguel Ángel López returns to the Astana Qazaqstan team. 27-year-old Colombian cyclist has signed a new two-year agreement with the team for 2022 and 2023, “the Kazakh team announced.

Miguel Angel Lopez, star signing of the Movistar Team for this 2021, did not catch on with the Spanish team and, despite his renewal being announced, shortly after, and coinciding with his retirement in the Tour of Spain when he was third overall, the termination of the contract was announced.

“It’s coming home”

“To return to the Astana team is to return home. In the world of professional cycling, a cyclist who wants to continue advancing sometimes has to change something in his career to acquire a new experience,” said López, speaking already, again, as future member and leader of Astana.

Miguel Ángel López spent six seasons in the Astana project, between 2015 and 2020, and achieved victories in the Tour de Suisse (2016), Volta a Catalunya (2019) or Tour de Colombia (2019), in addition to stages in the Tour de France and La Vuelta, being podium also in the Vuelta and the Giro d’Italia.
