Pogacar wins in Saint-Lary-Soula Pla d’Adet and strengthens his lead
Basque: Pogacar located in Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adeten, and leading the way
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) has won the 14th stage of the Tour de Francethe one disputed between Pau and Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d ‘Adet (151.9 km), in which the Slovenian has reinforced his lead.
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) was second at 43 seconds Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) third, 1 minute and 14 seconds behind the winner.
The attempts to break away were unsuccessful at the start of the stage, due to the pace imposed by the peloton. With just over 70 kilometres to go, the riders began to climb the legendary Tourmalet. No one has set fire to the favourites, but David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) attacked. Oier Lazkano (Movistar) has followed the FrenchmanThe Basque cyclist has caught up with Gaudu, even leaving him behind, and Lazkano was first at the top of the TourmaletAt the start of the stage he told EITB Media that the Tourmalet is special for him; well, said and done. Oier Lazkano has continued on the descent, and Nine other cyclists have joined the Vitoria native. The head of the race was therefore formed by Oier Lazkano, David Gaudu, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Deceuninck), Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2r La Mondiale), Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos-Grenadiers), Ben Healy (EF Education- Easy Post), Sean Quinn (EF Education-Easy Post), Louis Meintjes (Intrmarche-Wanty), Alxey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan) and Magnus Cort (Mobilinte-Wanty).
Then, on the first slopes of the second category Hourquette d’Ancizan climb, Gaudu picked up the pace. The Frenchman was joined by Oier Lazkano, Kwiatkowski, Armiraila, Healy and Meintjes. Lutsenko, Van der Poel, Quinn and Cort fell behind. Later, Armirate was also unable to keep up with the leading quintet. At the top of Hourquette d’Ancizan Gaudu was the strongest and Oier Lazkno was second.
On the last climb, in Saint-Lary-Soulan, Gaudí and Healy attacked. Lazkano, however, fell behind, as did Kwiatkowski and Meintjes. Later, Healy was left alone at the head of the race.
Healy rode with a lead of just over a minute over the favourites. Adam Yates (UAE Emirates), who had been working for Tadej Pocarar, attacked with seven kilometres to go. Then Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), Jonas Vingegaard’s teammate, went to work in the favourites’ peloton.
Adam Yates joined Healey with five kilometres to go, and almost at the same moment, Pogacar attacked in the group of favourites. The Slovenian joined Yates, who he quickly left behind. Pogacar remained at the front of the race, but Vingegaard went after him, together with Evenepoel. It looked like Vingegaard was going to catch Pogacar, but the race leader made another change of pace.
Vingegaard was unable to keep up with Pogacar’s strong pacehence The Slovenian has taken the victory of stage. Vingegaard crossed the finish line in second place, 39 seconds behind.but Pogacar, thanks to the bonus, has put another four seconds on the Dane. Remco Evenepoel was third, one minute and 8 seconds behind the leader.. To the Belgian, POgacar has put six more seconds on him due to the bonuses.
Tadej Pogacar thus consolidates his lead. Now, in the general classification, Pogacar is one minute and 57 seconds ahead of second-placed Jonas Vingegaardand in two minutes and 22 seconds to third, Remco Evenepoel.
