Van Dijk criticises refereeing after defeat to England: “He ran to the dressing room”

Virgil Van Dijk left the field devastated by the elimination in the semi-final of the Eurocup to the England after the defeat by 2 a 1conceding the second goal in the 45th minute of the second half. After the match, the Dutch defender made a point of showing his dissatisfaction with the refereeing by German Felix Zwayer.

“The referee ran into the dressing room straight after the final whistle, he didn’t greet anyone. I think that says a lot,” said Van Dijk.

The Dutch defender’s discontent has an explanation. After opening the scoring with a great goal from Xavi Simons, the Netherlands ended up conceding the equalizer with a penalty in favor of England that generated heated debates. The move in which Dumfries ends up hitting Harry Kane’s foot is somewhat questionable.

The second goal conceded, in the 45th minute of the second half, practically ended any chance of the Netherlands qualifying for the Euro Cup final. This was because the German referee Felix Swayer had only allowed two minutes of injury time, which ended up being extended to five, but it still wasn’t enough for the Dutch to react.

“I have no words. Conceding a goal with just a few minutes left in the game is terrible, it hurts so much. I have to be here, but I don’t even know what to say. It hurts so much,” confessed Van Dijk.

Spain and England will face each other next Sunday at 4pm (Brasília time) at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, the venue for the grand final of the European Championship. The Spanish could become the tournament’s greatest champions, with four trophies, while the English are seeking their first continental title.
