Many people fear control, and it’s no wonder. Even if we know we haven’t done anything wrong or illegal, we still wouldn’t want someone to scrutinize our account and meticulously check all inflows and outflows. It turns out that information has come to light about how many people have already had their bank accounts examined.
Does the tax office have access to accounts? Not everyone is aware of this
You may not know this, but for over two years now, since July 1, 2022, the Polish Deal has given tax offices the power to request disclosure of data relating to the accounts of natural persons.
Who exactly can obtain such information?
- Head of the Customs and Tax Office;
- Head of the tax office competent for the taxpayer;
- Head of the National Tax Administration.
The changes are significant because in the past, access to this data was only possible when there was a suspicion that the taxpayer was acting illegally. As fakt.pl reports, now there doesn’t even have to be any suspicion.

Does the tax office see the loan? Not only will they get such data
At the request of the Commissioner for Human Rights, the Ministry of Finance has provided data on the number of times banks were asked to provide information on Poles’ bank accounts. It turns out that in the period from July 1, 2022 to March 31, 2024, this happened 407 times by heads of tax offices and 3,112 times by heads of customs and tax offices. What exactly can the data shared concern? This includes, among others, recipients and senders of transfer data, credit agreements, agreements on the provision of safe deposit boxes, and powers of attorney held.
