1980 Olympic Champion Nikolai Korolkov Dies at 77
The 1980 Moscow Olympic champion in equestrian sport Nikolai Korolkov has died at the age of 77. This was reported on the website of the Russian Equestrian Federation.
The reasons for the former athlete’s death are not specified. The farewell to Korolkov will take place on June 6 in Aksay in the Rostov Region.
“Until his last days, Nikolai Pavlovich remained faithful to equestrian sports – he trained athletes, attended major competitions, and was always close to horses and people who were passionate about them,” the statement says.
Korolkov won gold in team dressage at the 1980 Games. He also won silver in individual dressage. These Games were the first to be held in a socialist country. The competition was boycotted by the United States and most Western countries, and the overall medal count was won by the USSR team,
Dressage is one of the Olympic disciplines of equestrian sport. In it, the rider must demonstrate the horse’s ability to move correctly and efficiently at various speeds.
