Canada midfielder Tajon Buchanan undergoes surgery after fracturing tibia

Canada midfielder Tajon Buchanan underwent successful surgery on Wednesday after suffering a fractured tibia in his left leg, the news was released by the country’s soccer federation (Canada Soccer), which will face Venezuela in the quarterfinals of the America Cup.

The 25-year-old Inter Milan player was injured during training on Tuesday and was taken by ambulance to a Dallas-area hospital.

“Canada Soccer can confirm that Tajon Buchanan underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured tibia this morning in Fort Worth,” the organisation said in a statement.

“We wish Tajon the best in his recovery process and hope to see him back on the pitch soon,” the statement added.

Buchanan started Canada’s Group A opener at the Copa América, a 2-0 loss to Argentina. He then started on the bench in the 1-0 win over Peru and the goalless draw with Chile.

The Canadian team, making its debut in the continental tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals as the second-placed team in the group and on Friday will go to Arlington, Texas, to face Venezuela for a place in the semifinals.

Buchanan has scored four goals in 41 appearances for Canada, which will co-host the 2026 World Cup with the United States and Mexico.
