Southgate sees improvement in England’s performance in draw against Slovenia

England drew 0-0 with Slovenia on Tuesday at the RheinEnergieStadion in the final round of the Euro 2016 group stage. Despite the result, manager Gareth Southgate was pleased with his team’s performance in the match.

“I think we improved a lot with the ball and created some good opportunities. It’s a difficult task for us at the moment not to get that shot on goal,” Southgate said.

The performance was criticized by English fans, who booed the team and even threw some glasses towards the coach.

“I understand the narrative about me. This is better for the team than for them. But it’s creating an unusual environment to work in. I’ve never seen any other team qualify and receive something similar. I understand some of the reactions, but it’s a strange environment we’re playing in,” he said.

England did not impress at the start of the competition and scored just two goals in three games played. Even with a performance below expectations, the national team qualified for the next phase in first place in Group C, with five points won.

Now, England awaits the last duels of the group stage to find out their opponent in the round of 16. However, the game already has a date set. The match will be held next Sunday, at 1pm (Brasília time), at the Veltins-Arena.
