Lautaro cites pride in Argentina’s winning goal against Chile

Argentina got rid of the bad memories of MetLife by qualifying this Tuesday (25) for the quarterfinals of the America Cup of the United States-2024 with a 1-0 victory over Chile, which was in a complicated situation in Group A for the second round.

Lautaro Martínez, in the 88th minute, scored a hard-earned goal from inside the penalty area with which the ‘Albiceleste’, three-time world champion and defender of the continental title, obtained their second victory in the group and qualification for the next phase.

“When I score a goal with this shirt I go home happy, proud because I feel like I achieved my goal,” said ‘El Toro’ Martínez.

The MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford – neighboring New York – was the setting where Argentina and Messi experienced one of their most painful defeats, in the final of the Copa América Centenario-2016 against Chile, who won their second continental championship on that occasion, and made with the number 10 resigning from Albiceleste, only to later backtrack.

“With results like this, winning in the end, coming off the bench, we always enjoy it more”, added Lautaro.

With this result, Argentina leads group A with 6 points, Canada is in second with 3, and Chile and Peru are further behind with just one point each.

The third and final round of the group, scheduled for Saturday, the 29th, will feature the games Argentina x Peru, in Miami, and Canada x Chile, in Orlando, both at 9pm (Brasília time).
