IIHF will revise the rating system due to the improved position of the Russian team
The International Hockey Federation (IIHF) is thinking about revising the ranking of national teams due to the improvement in Russia’s position in it. The chairman of the Finnish Hockey Federation and member of the IIHF council, Heikki Hietanen, spoke about this, as quoted by Yle.
Hietanen said that at the next meetings the IIHF will consider the rating points that are awarded to the Russian team. “We are now discussing how to deal with this in the future. This was the solution to the situation at that time, we did not want to punish them with a downgrade or loss of points. We will think about how fair this situation is for other countries,” he said.
Previously, the Russian team moved up one place in the IIHF rankings. The team is in second place with 4065 points. The suspended Russians improved their position after the defeat of the Finnish team in the quarterfinals of the 2024 World Cup. Canada leads the ranking with 4,100 points, while the Finnish team takes third place (3,955 points).
In February, the IIHF extended the suspension of the Russian and Belarus national teams for the 2024/2025 season. The reason for this decision was current security risks.
