Conmebol calls up referees and assistants for the first time for Copa América

The Copa América, the oldest football team championship in the world, will have the presence of female referees and assistants for the first time in its history, Conmebol announced this Friday (24), when presenting the list of 101 referees for the United States edition-2024.

The entity that governs South American football highlighted that the participation of two referees, the Brazilian Edina Alves and the American Maria Penso, in addition to five assistants and a VAR referee, “is a high commitment made since 2016, which is committed to the development and in the professionalization” of more women on and off the field.

The linesmen called up are Brazilian Neuza Back, Colombian Mary Blanco, Venezuelan Migdalia Rodríguez and Americans Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt. Nicaraguan Tatiana Guzmán will be in the VAR.

The 101 chosen referees, including the Italian Maurizio Mariani and his compatriots Daniele Brindoni and Alberto Tegoni (assistants) and Marco Di Bello and Alejandro Di Paolo (VAR), within the scope of the Conmebol-Uefa agreement, must appear in Dallas on the day June 12, to undergo physical and technical assessments.

The Copa América in the United States will be held between June 20th and July 14th.
