English attacking midfielder Phil Foden, 23, was elected this Saturday the best player of the 2023/2024 Premier League season, an award given for the fifth consecutive year to a Manchester City footballer.
Foden scored 17 goals and provided eight assists in 34 games, a personal best. The athlete helped his team reach the final round, on Sunday, as leader, two points ahead of Arsenal.
The midfielder knew how to take advantage of the absence of his teammate Kevin De Bruyne, who was injured several months ago, to impose himself on the team’s tactical scheme. He is the second most used outfield player by coach Pep Guardiola.

Foden succeeds his teammates De Bruyne (winner in 2019/2020 and 2021/2022), Rúben Dias (2020/2021) and Erling Haaland (2022/2023), his predecessor.
The Norwegian striker was one of eight nominees, along with Alexander Isak (Newcastle), Martin Odegaard (Arsenal), Declan Rice (Arsenal), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) and Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).
A panel of experts participated in the vote, including former players and journalists, but not fans. Foden achieved a “double” by also being named player of the year in 2024 by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA), the association of English football journalists.
“I am very proud to have won this award,” Phil Foden said in a City statement. “The Premier League has a reputation as the most important league in the world, it is a pleasure to be nominated alongside so many great players who have had exceptional seasons at our club,” he concluded.
