French basketball player Ertel was suspended from the 2024 Games for playing at Zenit

French basketball player Thomas Ertel was suspended from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris for playing for the Russian club Zenit. L’Equipe reports this.

According to the source, the reason was an interview with the point guard. In it, he said that the French Basketball Federation knew about his transfer to the St. Petersburg team, but stated otherwise, so that he would help them at the 2022 European Championship. After this, the federation refused to call Ertel to the national team.

In 2022, the French Basketball Federation demanded that all national team players sign an agreement under which they cannot play for clubs from Russia, otherwise they will be excluded from the national team. Ertel signed the document, but signed a contract with Zenit, after which he was banned from playing for the national team.

The Olympic Games in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11. Russians and Belarusians, if a number of conditions are met, will be able to compete in the individual competitions of the tournament in a neutral status.
