The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) annulled this Thursday (9), on appeal, the sanction of partial closure of the Atlético de Madrid stadium for two games due to racist chants directed at Athletic Bilbao player, Nico Williams, at the Metropolitano , at the end of April.
In a statement, the RFEF particularly values the “active collaboration” of Atlético, which appealed the partial closure of the stadium for the next two games and the imposition of a fine of 20 thousand euros (around R$111 thousand) after this incident occurred. during the 33rd round of LaLiga contra o Athletic Bilbao.
Spaniard Nico Williams heard imitation monkey sounds directed at him during his team’s 3-1 defeat in Madrid. The match had to be stopped for several minutes when Williams pointed out the incident to the referee.
The perpetrator of these acts was identified thanks to cameras present in the stadium and made available to the police after the match, while Atlético suspended its fan membership plan.
In its resolution this Thursday, the RFEF praises the club’s quick condemnation of these acts, described as an “isolated incident carried out by a single subject (…) and not by an undetermined group”, which justifies, according to the federation, the cancellation of the sanction.
Despite the efforts of institutions, which now report each incident to the authorities and multiply communication campaigns, Spain continues to have problems eradicating racism from its stadiums, where Brazilian Vinicius Jr is frequently the victim of insults.
