The French Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez) won the sixth stage of the Back to Spainheld this Friday between Tarazona and Laguna Negra (132 km), after surprising the Dutchwoman in the final meters Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime), which extended its lead at the top of the general classification.
A lead to which Vollering could not add, however, a second consecutive stage victory after the one achieved on Thursday in Jaca, despite proving, once again, to be the strongest of the test.
As was clear during the ascent to Laguna Negra, a climb of 6.5 kilometers with an average slope of 6.8%in which the Dutch cyclist took the initiative at all times.
In fact, Vollering, the current Tour de France champion and last runner-up in the Vuelta a España, did not hesitate to assume the responsibility of leading the peloton shortly after beginning the climb.
A sustained pace that allowed the SD Worx-Protime runner to go little by little eliminating rivals until leaving the leading group at just over ten units with two kilometers to go.
Moment in which the leader of the general classification seemed to take a small break, which allowed her compatriot Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck) launched an attack to which Vollering herself responded in the first person.
A warning from the Dutch cyclist who, with 600 meters to go before the finish line, once again showed signs of her strength with a change of pace that ended up definitively overtaking the Italian. Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), its main rival in the fight for the general classification.
But when everything seemed set for a new victory for Demi Vollering, the figure of the Frenchwoman Evita Muzic emerged, who not only responded to the final acceleration of the Dutchwoman, but also found the strength to snatch the stage victory from the Dutchwoman by 2 seconds.
The Dutchwoman also completed the podium Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck) who crossed the finish line in third position, 15 seconds behind the stage winner.
Two places further back, in fifth position, the Italian Longo Borghini concluded, seeing her disadvantage in the general classification increase to 56 seconds with Demi Vollering taking a new step to win her first Vuelta a España.
