Ukrainian skaters opposed the move of Davis and Smolkin to Canada
Ukrainian figure skaters Maria Golubtsova and Kirill Belobrov reacted to the transfer of Russians Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin to the Montreal Figure Skating Academy, in which they belong. Their words are quoted by Suspilne Sport.
Golubtsova admitted that she and her partner had a negative attitude towards the couple’s transition. Belobrov emphasized that the “neighborhood” with Davis and Smolkin worries Ukrainians. “We do not maintain any relationship with former Russian athletes, regardless of which team they compete for,” they added.
Davis and Smolkin have represented Georgia since the 2023/2024 season. They transferred to the Ice Dance Academy in Canada on April 8th.
Davis and Smolkin made their debuts in the senior Russian national team in the 2021/2022 season. They finished eighth at the European Championships and took 14th place at the Beijing Olympics. Athletes living in the USA missed the 2022/2023 season.
