Sales of electrified cars grew 50% in the first quarter

The electrified vehicle industry continues to grow. During the first quarter, 1,433 units sold were recorded, which meant an increase of 50.4% compared to the same period in 2023 and brings a new record, according to the Automotive Association of Peru (AAP). Furthermore, in March alone, 477 eco-friendly cars were placed, which brought a growth rate of 22.6% in interannual terms.

While cars that have a greater impact on the environment were positioned behind, despite having increased their sales between 89.4% and 146.7%. Along these lines, 89 pure or electric cars were sold. BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and 74 plug-in hybrids or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle).

While the numbers are good, the AAP maintains they could be much better.

“Although the progress achieved regarding the greater entry of eco-friendly vehicles is positive, We consider that the speed of growth could be greater if the authorities decide to provide incentives that this market requires to develop,” they point out.

In the case of Colombia, for example, its market has registered 9,297 units sold in the first quarter, with a penetration ratio of 23%. This percentage reaches 10% in Ecuador, 8% in Mexico and 3.3% in Peru, placing us at the bottom of the region. In that sense, the union recommends greater participation of the public sector through various regulations, such as lower tax burdens and lower import tariffs.
